Preprint discovery: Keeping on top of the latest research

In this workshop, our panellists will discuss the value of evaluated preprints and show how Sciety can aid passive research discovery to save you time.

For many researchers the steady growth in preprint adoption represents a net good for academic publishing, helping to change the culture of scientific discourse through open discussion, transparency, and constructive criticism. Bolstered by support from the research community, preprints are increasingly cited in research articles and reviews, accepted as evidence of progress in job applications, and recognised by an increasing number of funding organisations.

However, staying up to date with the latest research can increasingly seem like a full-time job, and for many, the lack of standardised trust indicators around preprints can harbour distrust from the community.

That’s where Sciety – an application that enables researchers to efficiently discover, openly curate and evaluate relevant preprints – can help.

In this workshop, Chair Cristian (V.A.) Munteanu will be joined by Sciety’s Product Manager, Mark Williams, and eLife’s Community Manager – Outreach, Shane Alsop, to discuss the implications of increased preprint adoption. They will demonstrate how Sciety helps to enable discovery of the latest research findings, accompanied by expert commentary curated by the community – all in one place.

If you are interested in creating impact through evaluated preprints and understanding more about Sciety, and would like to be among the first to participate in Sciety’s new experiments around passive research discovery, we invite you to register now.

Join us on Wednesday, April 5, at 3pm BST | 2pm UTC

Sciety is committed to providing a safe and welcoming experience for everyone. Please take a few minutes to familiarise yourself with eLife’s Code of Conduct which also applies to Sciety events. All event attendees are expected to abide by it.

Chair:

Cristian (V.A.) Munteanu is PostDoc at the Institute of Biochemistry of the Romanian Academy and his main interest is related to the role of post-translational modifications in protein folding, sorting and degradation, with a particular emphasis regarding the activation of the immune system in cancer. Cristian’s main background is centered around analytical biochemistry, data analytics and various mass spectrometry-based omics related fields.

Panellists:

Mark Williams, Product Manager, Sciety. Mark’s focus is on understanding the needs of the research community, and working to deliver a brilliant experience around the discovery, peer review and curation of preprint research. Mark’s background is in education technology and teaching in further and higher education.

Shane Alsop, Community Manager – Outreach, eLife. Having worked with scientists, researchers and funders in a variety of roles at prominent non-profit, native open access organisations, Shane is keen to understand how Sciety can become part of researchers’ daily workflow for preprint aggregation and curation.
